Budapest: Like a Local

To experience Budapest like a local, you'll want to immerse yourself in the city's culture, cuisine, and daily life. Here's a detailed itinerary for a 5-day trip:

Day 1: Arrival and Orientation

Morning:

  • Arrival: Settle into your accommodation, preferably in a central district like District V (Belváros-Lipótváros) or District VII (Erzsébetváros).
  • Coffee Break: Start with a coffee at a local café such as Artizán Bakery. Or have a look at some of these other places, if that doesn’t strike your fancy: Cafes & Breakfast.

Afternoon:

  • Walking Tour: Take a walking tour of the city center. Focus on key landmarks such as St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Parliament Building, and Liberty Square. Or y’know.. walk with the best. Hungary gave the world paprika, Rubik’s Cube, and us. Coincidence? We think not. Book now! WannaWalk Original Free Budapest Tour
  • Lunch: Try Menza in District VI for a modern take on Hungarian cuisine, or at a local butcher shop Belvárosi Disznótoros for sausages(the likes of which Anthony Bourdain has also enjoyed). Or Mór’s! Watch the episode here.

Check out our full City Guide!

Evening:

  • Danube Promenade: Walk along the Danube Promenade for stunning views of Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge. Along the way, you’ll pass several of the famous Genre statues – feel free to rub a couple in semi-inappropriate places for good luck. (Although this joke will make a lot more sense after you’ve joined our walking tour… book now!)
  • Dinner: Enjoy a traditional Hungarian meal at Dunacorso Étterem. Make sure to book a table with a view and you’ll catch a bit of live Hungarian gypsy music as well!
  • Ruin Bar Experience: Visit a ruin bar like Szimpla Kert for a couple of beers, then move along to local favorites like Doboz or Füge Udvar in the Jewish Quarter for a unique nightlife experience. Check out our ruin bar recommendations: Ruin Bars and Clubs.

Day 2: Historical and Cultural Immersion

Morning:

  • Buda Castle District: Explore Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, and Matthias Church. Take in panoramic views of the city from the hilltop. Keep an eye out for the Kolodko mini statues!

Afternoon:

Evening:

  • Rudas Baths: Relax like a local in the thermal baths. The Rudas Baths are both historic and beautiful. Home of the prettiest Turksih Baths(but also the smallest) Check our recommendations: Thermal Baths
  • Dinner: Dine at Kiosk Budapest, a charming modern Hungarian restaurant.

Day 3: Markets and Local Flavors

Morning:

  • Central Market Hall: Explore the market, sample Hungarian sausages, pickles, and pastries. Try having a browse around the 2nd floor of the Central Market Hall too you’ll find grandmas selling knitted embroideries – it’s souvenir heaven! Don’t forget to grab some fried goose-skin (liba tepertő) – ask the butcher to toss some salt over it! Try the Salami platter and look out for the Cheese Monger on the right wing for a small box of assorted Hungarian cheeses 😉
  • Shopping: Wander around the nearby Váci Street for some (window?)shopping and the architecture – its such a beautiful street. Yes its touristy, but the sights – so pretty! If you’re still feeling snacky try Krumplis Lángos on the way! They mix a bit of mashed potato in the dough which makes it more crunchy and less greasy than your typical Lángos.
  • Coffee Break: Head to Parisi Passage a hidden marvel for café lovers, for a coffee(what else..? A pastry? You’re at about 2500 calories and its only noon🫠), before hopping on the number 2 tram(NatGeo’s top scienic tram lines in the world!) to Margaret Island.

Afternoon:

  • Margaret Island: Rent a bike or take a leisurely walk around the Island. It’s a favorite spot for locals to relax. Look for ruined monasteries, musical fountains or beer..!
  • Lunch: Have a picnic on the island with snacks from the market or visit a local bar for some street food like lángos at Stég Pub. 😉

Evening:

  • River Cruise: Take an evening river cruise to see the city illuminated at night. There’s no wrong choice when it comes to Cruises, just pick one that would suit your interest the most! Our favorites can be found here: Cruises
  • Dinner: Visit Vìgvarjú, a stunning restaurant offering the most tranditional Hungarian dishes and a wide variety of top quality Pálinka. Liz & Chain is just around the corner for a rooftop view. 🤫

Day 4: Hidden Gems and Local Life

Morning:

  • Városliget (City Park): Visit Heroes’ Square, the Vajdahunyad Castle(keep an eye out for mini-dracula), and the Széchenyi Baths. Chimney Cake anyone?
  • Szimpla Farmers’ Market: If it’s Sunday, don’t miss the farmers’ market at Szimpla Kert for fresh produce and local crafts.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch: Eat at Butcher’s Diner near City Park for proper, hearty Hungarian dishes. But if you start feeling heart palpitations or a suspicious gout flare only three days into your Hungarian food journey (honestly, disappointing), here’s a lighter and healthier alternative.
  • Jewish Quarter: Explore the Jewish Quarter, including the tour of Dohány Street Synagogue and the vibrant street art that can be found in the district. I do believe some folks have a tour running there as well. Hm.. wierd.🤔

Evening:

  • Dinner: Try Mama Goulash for, you guessed it… the goulash. Just kidding! The mains are solid(check out the Schnitzel – Christ on wheels!🤯), but we go there for the cake. Eszterházy, Dobos, just about everything your future dentist warned you about.
  • Rooftop Bars: Experience local nightlife on a rooftop like 360 or Intermezzo. Check out our recommendations: Rooftop Bars.

Day 5: Contemporary Culture and Departure

Morning:

  • Great Market Hall: Return to the market for any last-minute gifts(a wooden spoon for your bestest friend in the whole wide world – why not?🤷‍♂️) or souvenirs(paprika!).
  • Coffee and Chimney Cake: Enjoy a coffee and cake at Molnárs Kürtőskalacs or New York Cafe, an iconic Budapest café, said the be the most beautiful café in the world. Honestly… we agree.

Afternoon:

  • Art Tour: Join a Street Art Tour (huh.. its these guys🫥) or visit the Museum of Fine Arts for a dose of culture.
  • Lunch: Have a leisurely lunch at Arán Bakery in the Jewish Quarter, where you can try their legendary cinnamon roll!

Evening:

  • Farewell Dinner: End your trip with dinner at, anywhere – honestly, go back to one of the restaurants where you really wanted to try that other dish that your partner ordered and you were quietly jealous staring at it at like a destroyed soul while pretending you made the right choice… Or the one with the best atmosphere or the one with the best beer or palinka or maybe just spin the wheel and discover something new and exciting, who cares about food poisoning? You gotta risk a bad meal for a magical one. Spin the dice, roll the wheel! This one’s on you!😎
  • Nightcap: Have a final drink at a rooftop bar like The Duchess for breathtaking views of the city at night and some of the best cocktails in Budapest. Or… you could listen to me. Go to the best place in the city – bar none. Grab a bottle of wine, a beer, or even a juice box (we don’t judge), and take in the greatest, most spectacular view of my favourite place on earth. Sit for a moment, breathe, and enjoy a sip of momentary grace as you watch the lost Atlantis of the human soul rise from the landscapes mask of city lights. A final farewell – with love from the WannaWalk Team. Freddie Mercury mic drop
